Diabetes Insipidus Symptoms Causes Frequent Urination

Diabetes insipidus is a type of illness that is completely different from the more commonly diagnosed (sugar) diabetes mellitus. This particular condition is characterized in the medical field as the passing of large amounts of urine from the body because of a defect in the kidney tubules.

This particular form of diabetes mellitus can either be inherited or acquired by individuals.

As mentioned above, symptoms of this diabetes condition are different from the more commonly diagnosed sugar diabetes mellitus.

It is hard enough to explain diabetes insipidus without causing any confusion.

However - studies revealed that beside from the two conditions having the same word "diabetes" in their names, they do share a couple of the same symptoms which include excessive thirst and frequent urination.

Subsequently - when it comes to diabetes insipidus, an individual will urinate more frequently than an individual with diabetes mellitus. Therefore the more you know about these two types of diabetes, the better equipped you will be when it comes to explaining them or determining the difference between the two.

Diabetes as we know it was derived from the Greek word diabainein which in English means "to stand with legs apart". Diabetes mellitus on the other hand means "honey sweet urine" and diabetes insipidus means "bland on insipid urine".

Types of diabetic insipidus or DI

There are four known types of diabetic insipidus (DI) that we know about. Each of which come with a different cause that have to be treated in a different way. The four known types of DI (diabetes insipidus) are as follows:

  • Pituitary diabetic insipidus. This type is also known as central, hypothalamic, or neurohypophy seal. This is the most common type of of the four and it occurs as a result of a deficiency in an anti-diuretic hormone called vasopressin.

    This hormone is used by the kidneys to reduce the amount of urine that an individual may passed at any given time. This task is achieved by increasing the concentration of an individual's urine.

    This particular type of diabetes insipidus, can also occur due to damage to the posterior (back) part of the pituitary gland; thus the name given to this condition. This particular area is responsible for the production of the vasopressin hormone.

  • Gestagenic diabetic insipidus or Gestational diabetic insipidus. This is a condition which can develop during the cause of pregnancy if the placenta of the expecting mother, destroys the hormone too rapidly or if there is any damage to the pituitary gland.

  • Nephrogenic diabetic insipidus. This particular type of diabetes insipidus can occur as a result of different drugs being taken by an individual or it can happen because of kidney disease.

    This can include genetic defects as well. This type of diabetic insipidus or DI causes the kidneys not to respond to the anti-diuretic effect.

    The anti-diuretic is what occurs during the presents of normal amounts of the vasopressin hormone.

    Because this particular type of diabetic insipidus is inheritable, it can be with an individual for their entire life.

  • Dipsogenic diabetic insipidus. This is a particular form of DI that is also connected to the primary polydipsia. It happens because of serious suppression of the vasopressin hormone due to excessive intake of fluids by an individual. This usually happens due to an abnormality in an area of the brain that is responsible for thirst regulation.

    Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish this type of diabetic insipidus from that of pituitary diabetic insipidus. The reason for this, is that both of these conditions can occur from the same brain diseases. The only accurate way to differentiate between the two, is to measure the amount of vasopressin during a fluid deprivation stimulus test.

Once an individual have been diagnosed by a specialist who is knowledgeable in the various types of diabetes insipidus disorders, then the appropriate treatment can begin.

Treating diabetic insipidus

Treatment of the four types of diabetic insipidus can be a little different. For instance the treatment that is usually prescribed for pituitary, central or neurogenic DI, is a synthetic form of the anti-diuretic hormone vasopressin called DDAVP. This particular treatment can be administered by injection, nasal spray, or it can be taken orally (tablet form).

Your health care provider will recommend the necessary dosage and the required frequency by which it should be taken in order to treat or completely eliminate the symptoms of this disorder. Unfortunately patients that have nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (DI) can not be treated in the same way.

DDAVP or Chlorpropamide have proven to be ineffective in treating this type of diabetic insipidus.

Symptoms of this form of diabetes insipidus can usually be treated by reducing the amount of salt in ones diet.

Treatment of the symptoms can also be achieved by taking diuretics that have a paradoxical anti-diuretic effect in this type of diabetic insipidus.

The synthetic DDAVP hormone can not be used to treat patients diagnosed with dipsogenic insipidus or any other types of primary polydipsia because the hormone may cause the individual to get a condition called water intoxication during the treatment. Fortunately individuals diagnosed with gestational diabetic insipidus can be treated with the DDAVP hormone.

However the symptoms for this type of diabetic insipidus usually disappear within 4 to 6 weeks after the woman has delivered her baby. At this point, the DDAVP treatment can be stopped.
