Erectile Dysfunction - Men with Diabetes Develop Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction which is sometimes called impotence or ED, has effected between 35 - 75 percent of all men that suffer from or show signs of diabetes.

Apparently all men that have diabetes seem to develop some form of ED way before those that do not have the disease.

ED can be termed as the total inability to achieve an erection or the tendency to get but not able to sustain one...that will be firm enough for sexual intercourse.

The causes of ED or impotence among men with diabetes are very unclear and complex. The complexity of these ED causes are anchored around diabetes signs and certain changes that can occur to our bodies over time.

These changes in men that are diabetic, affect nerves, the function of muscle and blood vessels. It is possible that these changes can affect a man's sperm count as well. In order for men to achieve an erection, there are a series of events that must take place. These events include nerve stimulation in the brain, spinal column, the penis, the fibrous tissues of the muscles, and the veins and arteries in and near the corpora cavernosa.

Some prescribed medications like those used in the treatment of high blood pressure and illegal drug uses, can also be factors that contribute to the cause of erectile dysfunction.

  • Diet Pills (such as appetite suppressants).
  • Cimetidine (use for the treatment of ulcers.

Psychological triggers that can be a factor

According to medical experts, ED can also be bought on by psychological triggers that include:

  • Depression.
  • Stress.
  • Anxiety.
  • Constant Guilt.
  • Fear of sexual failure.

All men at some point in their lives, will experience some form of erectile dysfunction which can be an indication of a serious medical condition. However knowing the causes of it can help in seeking proper medical treatment and in some cases prevention of the problem. Only if ED becomes a persistent problem and occurs more than half the time, should there a need for serious concern.

But for men that are diabetics and for those that are not, experiencing ED due to psychological problems like the ones listed above, therapy may be needed as a part of your treatment. In some cases, adapting a new lifestyle that is more healthier can help men with diabetes symptoms and those without the disease, avoid or prevent ED.

This means that you will have to quit or give up smoking. According to medical facts, smoking will increase your risk of developing atherosclerosis which is the hardening of the arteries.

This problem leads to a restriction in blood flow throughout the various parts of the body which includes the penis; thus making it very difficult for men to achieve an erection. So if you are a smoker, you should quit and if you are not then don't become one.

Diabetic men as well as those that are not, who are over weight, should work on getting their weight down. When you are over weight, you are at a greater risk of developing vascular disease which is a known cause for erectile dysfunction problems.

Studies have shown that if you exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, for five days out of the week, your health will be improved. These studies have also revealed that you can reduce or prevent the causes of erectile dysfunction.
