Hypoglycemia – Symptoms and Causes of Hypoglycemia in Children

Hypoglycemia signs and symptoms means serious trouble for many people, including diabetics. This is a health problem which is also referred to as low blood sugar. Treatment of low blood sugar symptoms must be treated immediately. However, many individuals do not understand it or seem to care about it. This is a health problem which can occur in adults as well as in children. It is not just a diabetes symptom.

A healthy person has a normal blood glucose level that is under 100 mg/dl.

However, if you have been diagnose with diabetes, you have to use blood glucose test strips along with a blood glucose meter to ensure that you are within range.

Still there is a chance that you may experience a low blood glucose count. When an individual show signs or symptoms of low blood sugar, it means that their glucose level has dropped well below the normal level.

This is the level that is required for normal bodily functions.

Hypoglycemia symptoms or hypoglycaemia

What are hypoglycemia symptoms? The symptoms of low blood sugar come in two stages. The first stage involves a diabetic person experiencing or showing symptoms such as...

  • Confusion.
  • Dizziness.
  • Hunger.
  • Hypoglycemic headaches
  • Irritability.
  • Erratic heart beats.
  • A change in skin color.
  • Uncontrollable sweating.
  • Trembling.
  • Weakness.
  • High anxiety.

The next stage of low blood glucose level, is when you experience symptoms that include:

  • Severe headaches.
  • Foul modes.
  • Bad coordination of the body.
  • Numbness of both the mouth and tongue.

There is also the possibility of you passing out and going into a diabetic coma.

Causes of hypoglyceamia or low blood sugar

The causes of hypoglyceamia or symptoms of low blood sugar in a diabetic or non-diabetic, can be triggered or developed by various factors.

Some of these low blood sugar indicators include:

  • The production of too much insulin and not enough glucose in the blood stream.
  • Your diabetes medications can also cause you to develop low blood sugar symptoms. This is due to the fact - that they directly affect the blood glucose level.
  • Another cause for hypoglycemic signs and symptoms is your insulin injections. This only happens in some cases though.

Other factors or indicators that can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose), include...alcohol consumption and the use of drugs like coumodin, aspirin, and zyloprim benemid. Simple sugars or carbohydrates are also other known factors that can cause an individual to develop low blood sugar. Incidentally, if an individual with diabetes skips or delays a meal, they can cause their blood glucose to drop below normal level.

Which again, will cause hypoglycemic symptoms. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you should make sure that you stay on top of your blood glucose monitoring and do not delay your meals at anytime. Because if you do, you could experience what is called Fasting Hypoglycemia symptoms.

Frequent blood glucose monitoring and eating a healthy diet that is designed for diabetics, can help you avoid low blood sugar.

Low blood glucose or hypoglyceamia treatment

As a diabetic, you can begin treatment of your low blood sugar symptoms - simply by taking a few glucose tablets or eating some hard candy. You can also drink a fruit juice or soft drink (not the sugar free one because you are after the sugar in it). This quick treatment will help boost your glucose level.

If none of the items mentioned above are available, you can use a substitute such as a table spoon of one of these sweeteners, honey, corn syrup or sugar. These sweeteners should be place directly under the tongue for quick absorption into your blood stream. It is very important for diabetics and non-diabetics to know the warning signs of low blood glucose or low blood sugar.

Knowing the signs and symptoms of low blood sugar, will you seek immediate medical attention. The longer you allow your blood glucose to remain or drop below the normal required level, you put yourself at a greater risk of developing the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia is a serious condition that has to be treated immediately!
